Montreal Pride protestors brutalized by police while peacefully opposing genocide and the event’s corporate ties to its complicity in Israel’s ongoing atrocities.

On the afternoon of August 11, 2024, Montreal’s Pride parade, which began with it’s usual fanfare of corporate and political reputation laundering, was temporarily halted by a determined group of anti-Zionist and anti-capitalist protesters.

As the day unfolded, the pro-Palestine contingent participating in the parade faced a mixed reaction from the crowd. Some onlookers raised their fists in solidarity, chanting “Free Palestine” as the contingent passed by. However, they were also met with profane gestures and jeers from those in the pro-Israel contingent.

The first disruption occurred at 2:15 p.m. when the Palestine contingent interrupted the parade’s minute of silence. Helem Montreal, an organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for LGBTQ+ individuals from Arabic-speaking communities, took this moment to play sounds of war-torn Gaza over loudspeakers and stage a die-in.

Participants spread across the ground, some with red paint on their chests, arms and legs in a powerful display which confronted what has become a sanitized image of Pride and the violence inflicted on Palestinians by the Israeli state.

Fierté Montréal’s response to this disruption was telling. Rather than addressing the protesters’ demands or acknowledging the issues raised, the parade continued, a stark example of the festival’s prioritization of their image over the genuine struggles of the marginalized communities they claim to represent.

Later, at around 2:55 p.m, the parade faced another disruption organized by the Pink Bloc, an anti-capitalist 2SLGBTQ+ group, alongside Faction anti-génocidaire et solidaire (F.A.G.S.).

These activists, wrapped in an orange banner reading “no justice no peace,” blocked the parade route while chanting “free Palestine.”

Surrounded by dozens of police officers, the protesters underscored the complicity of Fierté Montréal and its sponsors in the ongoing occupation of Palestinian lands and the genocide of it’s people.

The situation escalated when police, tasked by parade organizers with protecting the interests of its corporate sponsors, confronted the protesters.

Despite the nonviolent nature of their demonstration, police aggressively moved in, forcibly ripping the banner from the protesters’ hands and attacking them with batons.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also took part in the festivities, as the Liberal Party leader gears up for another election season filled with appeasing his false progressive base.

Trudeau’s participation in Pride parades across Canada have drawn criticism over the years, but this year in particular due to his unwavering support of Israel during it’s ongoing genocide of Gaza.

Critics have accused Trudeau of ignoring Palestinian suffering, all while portraying himself as a champion of LGBTQ+ rights.

Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, a vocal advocate for Israel, has faced similar criticism for marginalizing Palestinian perspectives and supporting policies seen as oppressive, all while claiming to be a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community.

Housefather took part in the parade on Sunday and was confronted by activist Yves Engler, who confronted Housefather about his support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza, but was quickly corralled by police.

The involvement of such political figures in Pride is a clear an example of pinkwashing—using LGBTQ+ rights advocacy as a form of statecraft and reputation laundering to distract from and legitimize harmful policies.

Pinkwashing is deeply embedded in Canadian statecraft, where the art of governing includes manipulating public perception to maintain political and economic interests.

By participating in Pride, Canadian politicians and corporations engage in reputation laundering, using the festival as a platform to improve their public image while continuing to support and profit from numerous human rights violations, including Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine.

Sponsors of Fierté Montréal, including TD Bank, Starbucks, and Merck, have demonstrated support for Israel through various means.

TD Bank has made significant donations to Israeli-related causes, such as contributing $1 million CAD to the United Jewish Appeal (UJA), while also holding substantial investments in General Dynamics, a company that supplies military equipment to Israel.

Starbucks, although claiming no political agenda, has had its former CEO Howard Schultz recognized by pro-Israel organizations, with some major shareholders investing in companies tied to Israel.

Merck has a long-standing presence in Israel, actively collaborating with Israeli institutions, and has committed $1 million USD in aid during the recent conflict, alongside other business investments and partnerships in the country.

This reflects Fierté Montréal’s sponsors’ financial and humanitarian involvement in Israel ongoing colonial occupation. The complicity of Fierté Montréal in Israel’s genocide is inexcusable.

Despite numerous attempts by pro-Palestinian groups like Helem Montreal, Mubaadarat, Independent Jewish Voices and Sapphix to hold the festival accountable, Fierté Montréal chose to maintain a so-called neutral stance.

This neutrality, however, is a position of privilege and power that sides with the oppressors, allowing the genocide of Palestinians to continue unchecked.

As Desmond Tutu once said, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

The disruptions at Montreal’s Pride parade should serve as a critical reminder that true liberation cannot be achieved through performative allyship or superficial gestures.

The festival’s alignment with corporate, political and settler colonial interests undermines its mission of championing the liberation of the LGBTQ+ community.

For Fierté Montréal to truly honor its Pride roots as a protest against all forms of oppression, it must reject the influence of those who profit from injustice and commit to a genuine solidarity with all marginalized communities, including Palestinians.
