On March 19th, 2023, a rally and march took place in Toronto under the slogan of “We Won’t Back Down on Status For All”. The event started at 2 PM in Christie Pits Park, where a diverse group of participants gathered to advocate for the rights of immigrants, refugees, and all people regardless of their immigration status.

The attendees included activists, community organizers, and concerned citizens who shared a common belief that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, irrespective of their legal status. The rally was a powerful expression of solidarity and a call for action to create a more just and equitable society. By standing up for the rights of marginalized communities, the event aimed to promote awareness and effect positive change towards a more inclusive future.

Migrant workers in Canada are often denied status, which puts them in a vulnerable position and makes it difficult for them to resist what is often referred to as “systematic slavery.” This unfortunate reality often leads to migrant workers living in encampments, with even less access to society than their peers on the margins. By depriving these workers of status, they become more susceptible to exploitation and abuse, which can include low wages, poor working conditions, and inadequate access to basic services. These workers often have little to no protection under Canadian law, and the lack of access to status only exacerbates their already precarious situation. This is a troubling issue that requires urgent attention and action to ensure that all workers, regardless of their immigration status, are treated fairly and equitably.

When conducting outreach, it is common to hear stories of migrant workers experiencing wage theft, wrongful dismissal, work-related injuries, and illness. Unfortunately, many of these workers decline accessing even the few supports available to them out of fear of arrest and deportation. This fear is understandable given the precarious nature of their immigration status. However, it means that many migrant workers are left without access to critical resources and support when they need it the most. This is a sad reality that underscores the need for comprehensive immigration reform that addresses the systemic issues that migrant workers face in Canada. Without such reforms, migrant workers will continue to be trapped in a cycle of exploitation and abuse, and their basic human rights will be denied.

In Toronto, there is a growing migrant movement advocating for #StatusForAll. The movement is demanding that all migrants be granted legal status, and they are not afraid to take action to achieve their goals. The rallying cry of the movement is “shut it down” if they do not receive the status they seek. This bold stance reflects the urgency of the situation for many migrants who are living in precarious and vulnerable conditions. The movement is growing in strength and numbers, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for policymakers to ignore their demands. The migrant movement in Toronto is a powerful example of how grassroots activism can effect change and create a more just and equitable society for all.
